Women's Track and Field | January 20
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – It was an afternoon of personal records for the Northern Illinois University track & field team on Saturday at the Notre Dame Invitational, as well as another expansion to junior
Jehvania Whyte's (Kingston, Jamaica/Vere Technical) triple jump record, while also tying the long jump record. The Huskies finished fifth in the competition of seven teams.
"The athletes definitely showed improvement in their focus and execution from last week," said NIU Director of Track & Field
Connie Teaberry. "We have a ways to go, but several of their times and marks moved them up in the conference standings. These ladies were relentless today, and their performances reflect their efforts. There were 13 [personal record]'s achieved, it was a good day!"
Whyte's 12.48-meter (40' 11.5") triple jump improved the school record that she had originally set during the 2017 Indoor season but has since broken twice this season, both at Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center. The long jump proved to go her way as well, as she tied the 2016 record set by Le'Tristan Pledger at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championship with a distance of 5.81 meters (19' 0.75").
Three Huskies recorded MAC Championship automatic qualifying times including freshman
Ashley Tutt (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) in the 3,000-meter run, sophomore
Remy Amarteifio (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) in the 60-meter hurdles and Whyte in both the triple and long jumps. Tutt's second-place finish of 9:46.36 in the 3,000 meters and Amarteifio's third-place finish of 8.49 in the hurdles were personal records for the pair.
Four additional freshmen set new records to build on in the next few weeks of the indoor season, while five more Huskies improved on their records including
Kishona McCray (Newark, N.J./Newark Central) in the 60-meter hurdles,
Doshawn Franks (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter) in the 400-meter dash,
NeShay Curtis (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer South Berkeley) in the 800-meter run, as well as
Lorena Martin (Salamanca, Spain/IFS Fray Luis de Leon) and
Melissa Ricci (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) in the mile.
