Women's Track and Field | February 18
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – It was an afternoon full of personal bests for the Northern Illinois University track & field team on Saturday at the Orange & Blue Open. The team went head-to-head against athletes from host school Illinois, Illinois State, Western Illinois, Butler and Missouri Baptist.
"This was a great tune-up competition for the athletes," said NIU Director of Track & Field
Connie Teaberry. "We had several personal records that will move the athletes up in the MAC standings. Remy charged the way with victories in the 60 hurdles and 60 Meters."
Sophomore
Remy Amarteifio (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) earned two wins in the meet in the 60-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles. Amarteifio took fourth in the 60-meter dash and turned around for the finals to set her career fastest time in 7.63 seconds. In the hurdles, she took second in the prelims and followed it up with a win in the finals.
Two more Huskies ran their best 60-meter dash times in
Courtney Sockwell (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) and
Syanne Johnston (St. Peters, Mo./Fort Zumwalt East), who took second and fourth in the finals, coming in at 7.67 and 7.77 seconds, respectively.
The personal record marks continued for
Kenyae Majors (Burlington, N.C./Hugh Cummings),
Maggie Cavanaugh (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South),
Sara Atkins (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South)and
Fatima Stingily (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville). Majors finished the 60-meter hurdles in 8.80 seconds, Cavanaugh ran the 800-meter run in 2:25.91, Atkins finished the mile run in 5:16.72, and Stingily threw the shot put 11.54 meters.
"The staff was impressed and proud of their execution and technique. We are confident in the athletes headed to war at the MAC Championships next week. We are expecting to see some additional improvements."
