COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Northern Illinois University junior Jehvania Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica/Vere Technical) returns from the NCAA Track & Field Championships, on Saturday, an All-American after taking eighth place with a new triple jump school record of 13.24 meters (43' 5.25").

"I am overjoyed for Jehvania," said NIU Director of Track & Field Connie Teaberry. "Witnessing Jehvania going through struggles and not give up the last two years makes today extremely rewarding. So many athletes blame others for their misfortunes and never reach their potential because there is no accountability. Jehvania did just the opposite."

Whyte went into the competition ranked 14th among 16 of college athletics top-triple jumpers, and outjumped five from SEC programs, two from the Big Ten as well as a jumper from the Oregon Ducks.

Coach Teaberry has expressed her pride for the successes of Whyte and continues to preach to the dedication that she has put in to supersede her goals for the Indoor season.

"She let go of the things or people holding her back," said Teaberry. "She changed her nutrition. She attacked her summer training. Lastly, she began believing in herself, and now she is an Indoor All-American in the most challenging championships to qualify for."

The Indoor season marked Whyte bettering her school record in the triple jump seven times over the course of nine meets. She tied the school record in long jump, and then beat the record at the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships, where she was named the 2018 MAC Indoor Female Field Performer of the Year, and she has now concluded her junior-indoor season as the first Huskie to compete in the NCAA Indoor Championships and become an All-American.

"What a success story for Jehvania and the NIU Track and Field program. We are proud of Jehvania and can't wait to see what she accomplishes outdoors."

Whyte and her teammates will continue to the Outdoor season in two weeks when they head to Arlington, Texas to compete in the Bobby Lane Invitational March 23-24.
