Women's Track and Field | March 31
STANFORD, Calif. – Northern Illinois University junior
Jehvania Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica/Vere Technical) made her outdoor debut for the season at the Stanford Invitation on Friday and Saturday, where she recorded a new outdoor triple jump school record, taking third place with a distance of 12.69 meters (41' 7.75").
"We had another descent showing at Stanford," said NIU Director of Track & Field
Connie Teaberry. "The athletes have been trying to transition from indoor to outdoor without actually practicing for outdoor. They are improving and making needed adjustments, nicely. We have to remain positive and grind for the big performances to occur for our younger athletes. Our seasoned athletes, Lorena, Chennel and Jehvania, hit their automatic qualifying times and marks, and the staff sees better performances yet to occur."
Whyte's triple jump distance also set her personal-best, and she was able to reach her farthest long jump in her outdoor career with a 5.81-meter distance.
The success continued as five more Huskies recorded their personal best marks. Freshmen
Mackenzie Callahan (Minooka, Ill./Minooka),
Nora Finegan (Palatine, Ill./Fremd),
Khenadi Jones (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City West),
Kenyae Majors (Burlington, N.C./Hugh Cummings) and
Ashley Tutt (Channahon, Ill./Minooka) were able to come out of their races with their top times.
"We had huge personal record performances by
Mackenzie Callahan just missing the MAC automatic qualifying time for the 1500 taking 15 seconds off her time from last week," said Teaberry, "while Nora in the 800-, Khenadi in the 200-, and Kenyae in the hurdles proved to be strong competitors, hitting PR's as well as improving their MAC standings. The staff will keep encouraging the athletes, and the athletes will keep trusting the process and yielding improvements along this journey."
