Women's Track and Field | April 7
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Northern Illinois University track and field athletes return to campus from the Crimson Tide Invitational with multiple personal records under their belts after unfavorable weather conditions.
"The athletes competed well considering the cold temperatures," said NIU Director of Track & Field
Connie Teaberry. "We can walk away with preparation lessons to take into any competition. For some, the conditions didn't stop them from great execution. For others, we have to focus on competing and realize the conditions are the same for everyone."
The freshman and sophomore 3,000-meter steeplechase duo in
Noelle Maire (Belleville, Wis./Belleville [Sugar Grove]) and
Mercer Mack (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) ran a pair of personal best times finishing fourth and sixth, respectively. Maire finished her first 3,000-meter steeplechase race in 11:24.92, and Mack finished shortly after in 11:35.38.
In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomores Remy Amartiefio (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township) and
NeShay Curtis (St. Louis, Mo./McCluer South Berkley) each set personal-fast times as Amarteifio finished in fifth and Curtis in sixth with a time of 1:02.48.
"Noelle and Mercer had tough competition in the 3k steeplechase and managed to PR running strong races, while our 400 runners Ashanti [Hutton (Grandview, Mo./Grandview)] and Grace [Harris (Dousman, Wis./Alpha Omega Academy)] improved their season times with great execution," said Teaberry. "Remy had an aggressive run in the 400-hurdles with Neshay finishing on her heels. We will tighten up areas that need improvement in preparation to head to Illinois next Saturday."
The day of personal bests continued as senior
Lorena Martin (Salamanca, Spain/IFS Fray Luis de Leon) and freshman
Sara Atkins (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) ran their best times in the 1,500-meter run, crossing the finish line in seventh (4:43.24) and 14th (4:51.75).
