DeKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University track and Field team concluded the Huskie Classic on Friday with 11 personal records. Seniors
Ashanti Hutton (Grandview, Mo./Grandview) and
Ashley Sicard (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) finished out their regular season careers at NIU with a pair of personal bests in the 200-meter dash and shot put competitions.
"We don't get to compete at home very often," said NIU Director of Track & Field, "and just having the opportunity to compete in front of our fans, family. It gives that boost of confidence. Today, showed me where we are for the conference championships next weekend, and it looks like we are off to a good start."
Hutton ran her fastest 200-meter dash in 25.01, knocking off a tenth and a half from her previous record, and Sicard threw shot put, earning a distance of 13.70 meters (43' 1.50").
The freshmen were able to pull off more than half of the personal records set by the Huskies for the afternoon. In the 100-meter dash,
Khenadi Jones (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City West) and
Courtney Sockwell (Rockford, Ill./Rockford Lutheran) went one-two with personal best times of 11.82 and 11.85, respectively.
Nora Finegan (Palatine, Ill./Fremd),
Fatima Stingily (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville)
Kishona McCray (Newark, N.J./Newark Central) and
Mackenzie Callahan (Minooka, Ill./Minooka) each earned their best times in the their events with Finegam running a 2:12.82 in the 800-meter run, Stingily throwing the shot put 11.70 meters (38' 4.75"), McCray crossing the 100-meter hurdle finish line 14.39 and Callahan finishing the 1,500-meter run in 4:35.24.
Sophomores
NeShay Curtis (St. Louis, Ill./McCluer South Berkeley),
Melissa Ricci (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), and
Mercer Mack (Eureka, Ill./Eureka) added to the PRs for the afternoon. Curtis ran a strong 400-meter dash time (57.10) to round out the Huskies' personal records for the night, while Ricci and MAC Each ran the 800-meter run in 2:18.78 and 2:26.55, respectively.
"Today just showed their heart," said Teaberry. "We're ready for conference. We needed a boost of confidence to take into next week. It's going to be great to take this morale, this success going forward"
The Huskies had six first-place finishes from Jones, Curtis,
Sara Atkins (Warrenville, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South),
Remy Amarteifio (Evanston, Ill./Evanston Township),
Jehvania Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica/Vere Technical) and
Chennel Palmer (Kingston, Jamaica/St. Andrew) to add to the 17 top-three finishes.
