NOBLESVILLE, Ind. – The Northern Illinois University women’s golf team trimmed 12 strokes off its first round tally and moved up a spot after second round action in the 2016 Mid-American Conference Championships at Purgatory Golf Club Saturday.

The Huskies shot a second-round 298, a school best in a MAC Championships, with all five golfers firing sub-80 rounds. NIU was one of four teams in the field to accomplish that feat.

“Today was a good day,” NIU head coach Kim Kester said. “I’m happy with how we bounced back. Unfortunately we didn’t move up the leaderboard much, but we gained some shots to put us in a position to move up.

“We are second in the field with pars made. Today we did a good job of getting nothing over a bogey and we made more birdies. We’re looking to put together another good round tomorrow and move up the leaderboard.”

Freshmen Kelly Anderson (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton-Warrenville South) and Brielle Ward (Frisco, Texas/Wakeland) led the way for NIU as the pair each carded a 74 on Saturday.

Ward made the biggest improvement from the first round. She jumped nine spots up the leaderboard by cutting nine strokes off her first round score of 83 and enters the final round in 38th with a 157. However, Anderson made the biggest climb up the standings. She moved up 12 spots by virtue of her second round score and is in 21st with a two-day total of 151.

Lena Gautier (La Celle Saint Cloud) shot a second round 75, and has a two-round total of 151 and is also in 21st with Anderson. Junior Sydney Brickey (Burtchville, Mich./Shattuck-St. Mary’s) moved up nine spots to 24th after carding a second-round 75. She enters the final round with a 152.

Connie Ellett (Hampshire, Ill./Hampshire) dropped a spot to 43rd despite shooting a second-round 79. The Huskie senior has a two-day total of 159 heading into her last final round at the MAC Championships.

Kent State used a second-round 285 to move into the team lead. The Golden Flashes have a two-day total of 579. NIU is tied for seventh with Bowling Green with a 608 and are just six shots out of fifth place which is held by Akron. Akron’s Danielle Nicholson still holds the top spot as an individual with a 140.
