Kalamazoo, MI -Northern Illinois (9-3-1, 3-0 MAC) beat the Broncos of Western Michigan (2-10-0, 0-2 MAC) 4-1. The Huskies last posted a six-match unbeaten streak in September 2004.
"Our depth today proved to be key," said head coach Steve Simmons. "We had several guys step up and rise to the occasion."
Teamwork prevailed as several Huskies had a foot on goal. Marcus McCarty (Fort Worth, TX/ Fossil Ridge) scored first for NIU off an indirect kick assisted by Jose Alvarado during the 22:44 minute to put the Huskies on the board. In the 37.46 minute Steve Algozino (Frankfort, Ill./ Lincoln-Way East) headed the ball into the net off a corner kick assisted by Luis De La Cerda (Naperville, Ill./ Waubonsie Valley). The third and own goal materialized at 46.10. To round out NIU's efforts Ben Thomas (Hamilton, OH/ Fairfield) fed a ball to De la Cerda with only seven seconds to tick away in the game.
NIU rifled off eight shots on goal comparatively to the Broncos 5. Senior goalkeeper Matt Corcoran (Downers Grove, Ill./ North) posted four saves in the net for the Huskies, as did Western Michigan's keeper.
The Cardinal and Black improve their lead to 13-5-1 in the all-time series against the Broncos.
To round out their three-consecutive road game schedule the Huskies will face off against Western Illinois on Sunday (Oct. 8) at 1 p.m (CT) on John MacKenzie Alumni Field in Macomb, Ill. The Huskies have taken three of the last four meetings from the Leathernecks including a 3-2-overtime win last season.
