NIU Men's Soccer Maintains A Seven-Game Unbeaten Streak

Macomb, Ill. - Northern Illinois (10-3-1, 3-0 MAC) shutout Western Illinois (8-6-0) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at John MacKenzie Alumni Field. The Huskies last posted nine shutouts on the season in 2005 and have not recorded a seven-game win streak in the last 17 years.

"This win today is tremendous" said head coach Steve Simmons. "Western Illinois is flying high in their Conference [Mid-Continent] and for us to come play them at home and get a shutout is great."

Kevin Woerner (Elmhurst, Ill./ York) scored the only goal of the game in the 25th minute of the match-up. Woerner's goal was assisted by Marcus McCarty (Fort Worth, TX/ Fossil Ridge). The midfielder [Woerner] scored from about 25 yards out; he ripped a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal past Western's goalkeeper Stephen Paterson.

NIU rifled off 12 shots on goal comparatively to the Leathernecks seven.

Goalkeeper Joe Zimka (Algonquin, Ill./ Jacobs) recorded four saves in the net for the Huskies. Zimka has not allowed a goal in 580 minutes of action, notching six consecutive shutouts.

The Cardinal and Black improve their lead to 21-7-0 in the all-time series against the Leathernecks.

Northern Illinois is back in action against MAC foe Akron on Saturday (Oct. 14) at 2 p.m (CT) at Huskie Soccer Field.
