DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's soccer team fought back from an early 2-0 deficit against South Dakota State but ended up on the short end of the final score after a late goal by the Jackrabbits' Kerstyn Farrell. With the 3-2 decision, NIU drops to 1-1 on the young season while SDSU improves to 2-0.

"We did a great job to battling back from trailing 2-0 and played much better in the second half," said head coach Marci Miller. "Today's outcome was a case of similar teams battling each other and their player scored the game-winner on a great shot. From our perspective, we needed to be better defensively and on the attack."

SDSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half on a pair of goals by Kelsey Worcester at 27:39 and 37:29. The Huskies got on the board at 38:10 when Kim Schmitt (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) netted her second goal of the season, an unassisted tally from 15 yards away out in front.

NIU knotted the match at two at 80:25 when Karen Enockson (St. Charles, Ill./East) scored her second goal of the season on an unassisted shot from 10 yards left of center.

The Jackrabbits broke the deadlock six minutes later when a 25-yard shot left of center by Farrell found the back of the net at 86:53.

NIU resumes play on Friday, Sept. 1 with a match at Illinois State. The Huskies next home match will be on Labor Day at noon against Creighton.
