BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Northern Illinois University women's basketball team snapped a two-game road losing streak, defeating Buffalo, 58-53, at Buffalo at Alumni Arena Saturday afternoon.
"It was a good win for us on the road," head coach Carol Owens said. "We needed it for our confidence. It was not a good first half, but we came back in the second half and played well."
Mary Basic led the way for the Huskies (13-6, 5-3) with a season-high and game-high 18 points. She was 6-16 from the field and 4-8 from three-point territory. Jessie Wilcox followed with 12 points. She was a perfect 4-4 from the field.
"I thought Mary did a great job for us being aggressive offensively," Owens said. "I thought she was player of the game."
Buffalo (6-14, 1-7) had three players finish in double figures. Stephanie Bennett had 12 points, Kourtney Brown and Jamie Schiebner each finished with 10 points.
The Huskies went into the break down, 25-23. A pair of free throws from Kristin Weiner put the Huskies up 33-32. They would never relinquish the lead. A pair of three pointers from Wilcox and Basic gave the Huskies a 51-44 lead. Wiener finished the game with seven points and four rebounds.
NIU concludes its three-game road trip Tuesday, January 31, 2007 when they travel to IPFW. Tip off is 6 p.m. CST.
