Milwaukee, Wis. - The Huskies women's tennis team came up short on the road losing to Marquette, 7-0. The first loss of the year puts the Huskies' record at 2-1 now and Marquette improves to 3-8 on the year.
NIU came into the match riding the momentum of back-to-back wins, but they were unable to get the results that they wanted as the lost every match. Marquette's Shannon Brown and Lauren Little beat NIU's Lilian Asuaje and Nao Umemura, 8-5, in the number one doubles slot. Then Marquette's Maria Calbeto and Kylie Moore defeated NIU's Megan Brooks and Brooke Forsberg, 8-3, in the number two doubles spot to give Marquette the doubles point. Little picked up her second win of the day by beating Asuaje, 6-3, 6-1, in the number one singles spot and Marquette was able ride their momentum to take the rest of the singles matches.
Despite the results, head coach Ryun Ferrell was pleased with his team's effort and feels that they are coming around to be the team that they should be.
"This was a definite step forward for us," Ferrell said. "The score does not reflect it, but we had the attitude, we had the ability and we took a nice step forward. We still have a lot of work to do, but we are beginning to realize the team that we are `meant' to be."
The Huskies are back in action and look to take a weekend split tomorrow when they face Connecticut at 12p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
