NIU Women's Team Defeats Western Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team defeated Western Illinois, 5-1 in singles play and 3-0 in doubles action Sunday afternoon.

"It was a solid performance for the Huskies," NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell said. "Doubles looked very solid. We need to get back to the drawing board for singles we need to brush up on a few things to get us ready for conference play, nonetheless, a very solid performance."

The Huskies were led by sophomore Jenny Edner, who defeated Constanza Camacho, 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 singles. Nao Umemura won her No. 3 singles match over Yana Meinert, 2-6, 6-3, and 6-2. Brooke Forsberg, Megan Brooks and Dora Delgadillo also picked up victories in their matches.

The Huskies went 3-0 in doubles play with Forsberg and Brooks recording the victory in No. 1 doubles play, 8-1. Lilian Asuje and Umemura also recorded and 8-1 victory in their match, while Delgadillo and Edner scored the third doubles victory for the Huskies.

The Huskies will be back in action March 8, 2007 when NIU plays host to the University of Illinois-Chicago at 4 p.m.
