DeKalb, Ill. - The Huskies finished their week with a 5-2 loss to Ball State in a four-hour battle Friday afternoon. The loss puts the Huskies at 4-10 on the year, 0-6 in the Mid-American Conference. The win for Ball State puts them at 7-12, 2-5 in the MAC.
NIU was able to take the doubles point with wins from the combos of Lilian Asuaje / Nao Umemura and Dora Delgadillo / Jenny Edner. At number two doubles, Asuaje and Umemura beat the tandem of Jennifer Pollack and Christine Stromberg, 8-5. Delgadillo and Edner took down Emma Retter and Katherine Rist, 8-4, at number three doubles to improve to a 13-7 record.
The Huskies were unable to capitalize on getting the doubles point though. Nao Umemura was the only NIU player to get a singles win, beating Pollack, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2, at the third singles spot.
Huskies head coach Ryun Ferrell was pleased to get the doubles point today, but still feels that there is more room to get better before heading into next week's matches.
"This is probably one of the best matches we have played so far," said Ferrell. "We still have a lot more improving to do, but it's good to get that doubles point against a team that's known for good doubles play. We haven't peaked yet, but we're still improving by leaps and bounds week-by-week. We're looking forward to getting on the road to play Akron and Buffalo."
The Huskies are back in action on Friday, April 20, 2007 at 1pm when they visit the Buffalo Bulls in their second-to-last MAC contest.
