Final Stats
Chicago, Ill. - The Northern Illinois volleyball team was unable to get by in-state rival Illinois-Chicago, losing 19-30, 22-30, 27-30. The loss puts the Huskies at 5-7 on the season. The win for UIC improves their record to 7-4.
Senior Laura Baetzel (Chicago, Ill. / Burbank Queen of Peace) led the Huskies with 13 kills. Junior Mandi Caputo (Chicago, Ill. / Immaculate Heart of Mary / DePaul) added 28 assists for the Huskie offense. On the defensive side for NIU, freshman Maddie Hughes (St. Charles, Ill. / North) had 16 digs. Hughes has had double-digits digs in all but one match for Northern Illinois and has a current 10 match streak of doing so.
"I thought UIC came out with energy that was tough for us to match at their home court," said NIU head coach Ray Gooden. "They came out with all guns blazing against us tonight and played very well against us."
The Flames' offense was led by Amanda Kenny, who had 15 kills to go with 12 digs. Dana Van Syckle also added 49 assists for the UIC attack.
Next up for Northern Illinois is a match versus another in-state rival in Chicago State. The match will be held in Chicago, Ill. at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 14.
