DeKalb, Ill. - The Northern Illinois volleyball team defeated Toledo in three sets on Saturday night, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20, to improve to 11-9, 3-3 in the Mid-American Conference.
"We definitely played a much more consistent level of volleyball tonight," said NIU head coach Ray Gooden. "It was nice to rebound from a tough loss last night."
Both teams tallied 40 kills and 51 points, but the biggest difference was Toledo's (9-10, 1-5) 10 serve errors compared to NIU's three. The Huskies also totaled five aces, while the Rockets had two.
Junior Meagan Schoenrock (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) registered a team-high 17 kills to extend her double-digit kills streak to 22 matches. Junior Cassie Yates (LaPorte, Ind./LaPorte) had nine kills and a pair of blocks.
"Cassie had a really good weekend, especially offensively," said Gooden. "Having a career-high 18 kills last night was followed by a solid performance again tonight."
Freshman Kristin Hoffman (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) recorded her third double-double of the season with 32 assists and 12 digs. Sophomore Maddie Hughes (St. Charles, Ill./North) led the Huskies with 16 digs.
"It was nice to see Kristin set a steady match for us tonight," said Gooden. "She did a good job."
The Huskies host Buffalo (5-15, 0-6) next Friday at 7 p.m. CST in Victor E. Court.
