KENT, Ohio - Jenna Clausen (Racine, Wis./Horlick) scored on a header in the 72nd minute, giving the Northern Illinois women's soccer team a 1-1 tie against Kent State, Sunday.

Clausen's goal, her first of the season, came at 71:27, assisted by Thea Johnson (Homewood, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor).

"The goal came off a beautiful header from Jenna," said NIU head coach Carrie Barker, who moved her first-year record at the helm of the Huskies to 8-3-5, with a 4-2-2 mark in Mid-American Conference play.

Though the Huskies finished strong, their early performance left something to be desired, according to Barker. The lapse cost Northern Illinois, as Kent State's Caitlin Hester scored in the 28th minute to put the Golden Flashes (5-9-1, 2-5-1 MAC) up 1-0. Barker said her team upped its game following the score.

"About midway through the first half, we started to play much better," she said.

Neither team capitalized after Clausen's equalizer, and the match ended in a tie after two hard fought overtimes.

"It was a physical game from both teams, and both teams played very hard," Barker said. "We both had opportunities to put the game away, and a draw was a fair result."

The Huskies are now unbeaten in their last five matches. NIU picked up a 1-0 win at Buffalo, Friday.

"We'll take a tie and get four points from this trip," Barker said.

The Huskies return to the friendly confines of the NIU Soccer/Track and Field Complex to host Miami (OH), Friday, Oct. 24 at 4 p.m.
