Huskies Fall Short In Doubleheader With Oregon State

March 15, 2008

Game One

Game Two

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Northern Illinois softball team suffered setbacks in both games versus Oregon State (17-13) at Gill Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies (5-9) fell in the first game, 8-0, in five innings and lost the second game, 4-2.

A seven-run third inning for the Beavers was too much for the Huskies to overcome in Game One as OSU chased sophomore Kate Greenough (Portland, Ore/David Douglas) out of the game after giving up the seven earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in three innings. Junior Emily Gooding (Lismore, Australia/Lake Land C.C.) and sophomore Allie Parker (Evergreen, Ill./Marist) collected NIU's only hits.

In Game Two, the Huskies plated two runs in the first inning by forcing the issue on the bases and taking advantage of a Beaver error throwing error. After Gooding's single advanced senior Krista McPherson (Beecher, Ill./Beecher) to third base, Gooding stole second and a throwing error by OSU second basemen Cambria Miranda allowed McPherson to score from third. Senior Michelle Nendza (Palos Park, Ill./Lemont Mt. Assisi) then failed to get down a squeeze-bunt, but Gooding still scored after eluding a run-down between third and home to give NIU a 2-0 lead.

The Huskie lead did not last long as Oregon State responded swiftly by scoring two runs in the second off of freshman Joreigh Landers (Vernonia, Ill./Vernonia) and two more runs in the fourth against Greenough to build a 4-2 lead that the Beavers would not relinquish. Landers pitched the first three innings and the sixth for the Huskies, giving up two earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts. Greenough (3-4) took her second loss of the day after surrendering two earned runs on five hits in two innings. Gooding stole two bases and added two more hits for the Huskies. McPherson also notched two hits with a stolen base.

Next up for NIU is a trip to Iowa City, Iowa where the Huskies will match up with Western Illinois (3-14) at 12 p.m. CT and Iowa (16-6) at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 22.
