SAN MARCOS, Texas - Northern Illinois fell 11-5 to Texas Tech Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Field in San Marcos. It was the third consecutive loss for the Huskies, who dropped to 2-5 on the season.
Texas Tech took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first before the Huskies evened the score at three in their first at-bat in the bottom half of the inning. NIU loaded the bases and Danny Reed (Lindstrom, Minn./North Iowa Area CC) belted a three-run double to make it 3-3.
The Red Raiders again took a three run lead after striking for three runs in the third, including a two-run homer by Taylor Ashby.
Down 6-3, the Huskies chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth. In the fourth, Joe Buonavolanto (Willowbrook, Ill./Hinsdale South) scored on a wild pitch and one inning later Reed's RBI groundout scored Jeff Thomas (Loves Park, Ill./Harlem) to bring NIU within a run at 6-5.
From there it was all Texas Tech as the Red Raiders scored in each of the final four frames with two of those runs coming on a two-run eighth-inning home run by Roger Kieschnick.
"You can't give away free bases against a good team and we did that too much today," said head coach Ed Mathey. "Matt just was not sharp and got his pitch count up and we struggled all day. We had some chances to do some things offensively, but we shot ourselves in the foot."
AJ Ramos (1-2) notched the win for Texas Tech (6-5) and had eight strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Matt Jernstad (Oswego, Ill./Oswego) absorbed the loss and fell to 0-2 on the year after working five innings.
The Huskies will play two games Sunday at Bobcat Field beginning with a noon rematch against the Red Raiders. Following that contest, NIU will face Texas State at 4 p.m.
