ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Northern Illinois women's soccer team kicked-off the 2008-09 Huskie athletics year with a 2-1 exhibition win over Oakland, Friday.
Sophomore Becca Ford (DeKalb, Ill./DeKalb) scored the unassisted game-winning goal in the 59th minute of play. Though it won't count officially, the goal was the first for Ford in the Cardinal and Black.
Kelly Mullany (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) opened the scoring in the match, finding the net in the 15th minute. Oakland's Lindsey Blair answered just over three minutes later to tie the match 1-1.
First-year Head Coach Carrie Barker found playing time for nearly everyone on her roster, as 23 Huskies got on the field. Junior Lindsey Curnock (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) started in goal and played through the first half, allowing one goal and making two saves. Sophomore Audrey Holmer (Elmhurst, Ill./York) minded the net in the second period, recording one stop.
The Huskies and Golden Grizzlies each took nine total shots, with three of NIU's coming on goal. Northern Illinois earned six corner kicks to Oakland's three.
Northern Illinois opens the regular season Aug. 29 against in-state rival Eastern Illinois at the Northern Illinois Invitational.
