Bloomington, Ill. – The Northern Illinois volleyball team dropped its match against Illinois State tonight in five sets, 21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 25-23, 11-15. The Redbirds improved to 2-2, while the Huskies fell to 2-2.

“Their pin hitters were good tonight,” said NIU head coach Ray Gooden. “They did a good job of attacking with a high I.Q. tonight. They were able to hit the ball around and move with a lot of range. They played really smart and scored big points near the end of the match.”

The Huskies were at a disadvantage in nearly every category, but still managed to push the Redbirds to five sets, despite being out-hit 70-46 and out-blocked 11-5. 20 ISU serve errors compared to only six by the Huskies helped keep NIU close throughout the match.

“They have traditionally done a good job of blocking the ball on both sides,” Gooden said. “Their middles do a great job of filling in, but the pins do a really good job. If we weren’t attacking the ball as smart as we need to, they capitalized by making nice plays.

“In the games we lost, we lost badly. In the games we won, they were close. It was just a matter of playing good volleyball over a longer period of time.”

Junior Meagan Schoenrock (Sylvania, Ohio/Northview) led the Huskies with 23 kills. Freshman Kristin Hoffman (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) tallied a team-high 23 assists and sophomore Maddie Hughes (St. Charles, Ill./North) notched 21 digs.

The Huskies travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to play in the University of Northern Iowa Invite, starting with a match against UNI on Friday at 7:30 p.m. CST.
