EDWARDSVILLE, Ill.- The Northern Illinois University wrestling team improved to 4-3 on the season when it took home victories over SIU-Edwardsville and Missouri Baptist at the SIUE Duals Saturday afternoon. NIU scored a 48-6 victory over host SIU-Edwardsville and followed that up with a 35-6 win over Missouri Baptist.
Brad Dieckhaus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central) defeated Max Orris of SIU-Edwardsville, 16-0 in a technical fall and posted a 3-1 victory over Missouri Baptist's Robert Jablonski at 184 pounds, while Scott Penny (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) recorded two pins on the day, highlighted by a 36-second pin of SIUE's Terrence Connors at 197 pounds.
"It was a pretty good day," NIU head coach Dave Grant said. "We got solid performances from Dieckhaus and Penny. We're moving into MAC play on Thursday, and we've got to be ready. We still have things we need to improve on and fine tune the things we need to get better at to get ready for Ohio."
Penny had two of the Huskies five pins on the day. Tristen DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./Wichita West) pinned Anton Prater of Missouri Baptist in 1:06 at 133 and Bryan O'Connor (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) pinned Tim Mahoney of SIUE at 165 in 1:03. DeShazer has 13 pins on the season and is 17-6 on the season. Pat McLemore (Hinckley, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) also recorded a pin against Missouri Baptist at 141.
The Huskies return to the mat Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009 when they play host to MAC foe Ohio in NIU's Showcase Meet at the Convocation Center at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the door beginning one hour before the meet for $5 for adults and $3 for youth (under 17). NIU students are admitted free with their student ID.
