DeKALB - The Northern Illinois wrestling team's annual "Showcase Meet" lived up to its name, providing a show that featured countless stunning moments on the mat. But on a night that included a triple-overtime thriller, three pins and one body-jolting slam, the Huskies came up just short, falling to Ohio, 23-22, Thursday night at the Convocation Center.
"It's a disappointing loss," NIU Head Coach Dave Grant said. "But we had good performances out of (Pat) McLemore, (Steve) Zimmerman, Izzy (Montemayor), and (Bryan) Deutsch had a good pin."
A jaw-dropping pin from 157-pounder Bryan Deutsch (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) highlighted the night for the Huskies, who fell to 4-4 on the season, and 0-1 in Mid-American Conference competition. Trailing 2-1 to Clay Tucker midway through the second period, Deutsch executed a reversal to take a 3-2 lead, and immediately flipped Tucker onto his back for the pin.
Defending MAC champion Pat McLemore (Hinckley, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) also recorded a fall for NIU, pinning Germane Lindsey 1:36 into the third period. McLemore improved to 7-4 on the year with four wins by fall. The pin tied the match, 6-6, and followed a key decision in the night's opening bout at 133 pounds.
Redshirt sophomore Tristen DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./Wichita West), who leads the MAC with 13 pins, battled Quentin Keyes to start the meet. DeShazer was in control of the match, leading 5-1 with 22 seconds remaining, when he lifted Keyes and slammed him to the mat illegally, rendering a disqualification that put NIU in a 6-0 hole.
After McLemore's pin tied the match, freshman Steve Zimmerman (Chicago, Ill./St. Rita) grinded out a 5-0 decision over Kevin Christensen to move to 14-2 this year. Deutch's raucous pin followed, giving NIU a 15-6 lead, its largest of the night.
Ohio won major decisions in the next two bouts to get within a point of the Huskies, 15-14, when NIU sophomore Brad Dieckhaus (St. Charles, Ill./Francis Howell Central) and Ohio's Erik Schuth took the mat at 184 pounds. A takedown and escape from each wrestler left the pair in a 3-3 tie after regulation, and they went through two overtime periods without any scoring. In the third, Schuth escaped to take a 4-3 lead. Dieckhaus was unable to match the score in the 30 seconds alloted, and the Bobcats took a 17-15 lead on the strength of Schuth's the triple-overtime win.
"In those situations, you have to figure out a way to get an advantage on the guy to put it away," Grant said. "(Dieckhaus) had two takedowns in overtime that he was seconds away from getting, and seconds make all the difference in the world."
Northern Illinois' Scott Penny (Granite City, Ill./Granite City) answered at 197 pounds, taking a 4-2 victory over Christopther Iammarino to give the Huskies an 18-17 advantage. But Ohio's Andy Hartshorn pinned freshman Zak Saevre (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) to put Ohio back on top, 23-18.
Trailing by five points, freshman Izzy Montemayor (Barrington, Ill./Grant Community) needed to pin Tim Silvers to put the Huskies over the top. A standout 12-3 major decision victory by Montemayor allowed the Bobcats to slip out of DeKalb with a one point win.
The Huskies continue the MAC season, Saturday, Jan. 24 when travel to Kent State to face the Golden Flashes.
