ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team climbed back to .500 on the season with a 7-0 win over visiting SIU-Edwardsville at the Clocktower Resort in Rockford, Ill., Sunday afternoon. The Cougars played just four players in the dual match.
"Once we settled down, we took care of business today," said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. "We have to be more consistent, because we have been expending too much energy at the beginning of every match.
"We have been getting better in that area, but we need to start a match like we have been finishing them. I was really excited to see Stephanie Okuma out there. She deserved a shot at singles today, and grabbed hold of that opportunity."
The Huskies stole the dual match doubles point, picking up wins at both the No. 1 and No. 2 flights, before gaining a default win at the third position.
In singles play, Lilian Asuaje (No. 1), Kathryn Friedlund (No. 2) and Martina Schnaap (No. 3) all recorded straight-set wins, while Stephanie Okuma netted a 6-0, 1-0 default victory at the fourth position.
The Huskies will hit the road for the first time since Feb. 1 next Saturday (Feb. 28), when NIU faces host Illinois-Chicago at noon.
