YPSILANTI, Mich. - Freshman Emily Rogers picked up her team-leading 14th singles win, but the Northern Illinois women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Eastern Michigan in both team's Mid-American Conference regular season finale Saturday.
"We really extended the match again today, but obviously came up short," said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. "Getting beat in doubles deflated us a little bit, and that has been an issue we've faced all season. We need to be on top of that, and not let it affect us heading into singles, when winning the match is still in reach.
"Emily (Rogers) and Sara McLaughlin played great again, and they have become vital parts of this team; the future is bright for those young ladies. We still have a chance to end our season well when we head to the MAC Tournament next week. We'll likely be playing Ball State in the first-round, who we beat earlier this year. They will be looking for some revenge in that match."
The Huskies dropped two-of-three doubles matches in regulation pro-set decisions, as EMU secured the decisive doubles point. Kathryn Friedlund and Sara McLaughlin posted a convincing 8-1 win over EMU's Marcela Rivero and Rumbidzai Muskwe at No. 3 in NIU's lone doubles victory.
The Eagles won all four of their singles matches in straight-set decisions, at No. 1, No 2, No 3 and No. 5. Rogers, playing No. 4 singles, along with McLaughlin at No. 6, each captured straight-set wins to secure NIU's two singles victories.
NIU will travel to Toledo, Ohio, for next week's MAC Tournament. Seedings will be announced upon the completion of the regular season.
