BUSY SUMMER CONTINUES FOR OWENS

NIU head women's basketball coach Carol Owens is keeping busy this summer. In addition to coaching USA Basketball Women's U19 Championship Team which will be competing at the FIBA World Championships in Bangkok, Thailand July 23-August 3, she is participating in the NCAA's Women of Color Symposium that starts Thursday night and continues Friday. The NCAA national office is partnering with the Black Women in Sports Foundation. Owens is part of a group of 24 administrators, coaches and academics representing all three divisions, various backgrounds and areas of expertise and multiple sports that were selected to participate in the symposium and will be charged with generating recommendations. SOFTBALL READY FOR A RUN

After losing its opening game of the MAC Tournament by just one run, the Huskies continue play in the double-elimination tournament today around 2 p.m. (CST) against Bowling Green. The Huskies (18-36) swept the Falcons when the two met earlier this season. NIU won game one 7-6, and taking the second game 9-6. CARAVAN DETAILS REVEALED

Once again this spring, Northern Illinois coaches and staff are hitting the road to meet and greet Huskie fans at the annual Huskie Athletic Scholarship Fund (HASF) Spring Caravans. Coaches Jerry Kill (football), Ricardo Patton (men's basketball), Carol Owens (women's basketball) and Associate Vice-President/Director of Athletics Jeff Compher will headline the events to be held in Chicago, St. Charles, Rockford and DeKalb/Sycamore over the next four Thursdays. TRIP-Y GOLF GAME

Today's Daily Chronicle also featured this story on golfer Matt Triplett's strong finish at the MAC Tournament, and summer plans. Triplett finished 15th in the MAC, helping NIU to a fifth-place team finish, its best since rejoining the MAC.

For the fourth consecutive year, all 17 Northern Illinois sports programs have exceeded the academic standards set by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as measured by the Academic Progress Rate (APR), according to the 2009 APR report released today by the organization. FREE TENNIS CLINIC

The Northern Illinois men's and women's tennis teams will host a pair of free tennis clinics tonight at the Northern Illinois tennis courts. From 6-7 p.m., high school and elementary school students are welcome to come out and learn the game.
