NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week (Oct. 4-10)

Name: Chandler Harnish

Week’s Achievements: The Mid-American Conference's West Division Offensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, Chandler Harnish was one of the big differences in Northern Illinois' 31-17 victory over the Temple Owls. The quarterback completed 80 percent of his passes for the second straight week as he hit on a season-high 20 completions in 25 attempts for 211 yards and two touchdowns. The MAC's leader in passing efficiency, Harnish is 36-of-45 passing for 492 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions over his last two games. Saturday, he surpassed the 4,000-yard mark for career passing, becoming the sixth Huskie to achieve the feat and now has 4,125 career passing yards to rank sixth at NIU all-time.  He also surpassed the 5,000-yard mark in career total offense with 5,275 yards and is only the sixth NIU player to pass that mark.

Week’s Achievements: Libero Maddie Hughes totaled an astonishing 62 digs (6.89/set) in two NIU road wins over the weekend.  Hughes also had just one error in 31 serve reception attempts.  She tallied a season-high 30 digs and 20 perfect receptions in a five-set win over Central Michigan.  In a four-set victory over Eastern Michigan, she bettered her season high with 32 digs and was successful in 10 of 11 receptions.  The back-to-back 30-dig performances marked a first for Hughes in her career, and the fourth time she has reached the plateau overall.  She has now reached double figure digs in eight straight matches, with the last four being a total of 20 or more.
