MADISON, Wis. - Tim King scored on a header in the 95th minute, lifting the Northern Illinois men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory at Wisconsin, Wednesday night at McLimon Field.
King's header came as Sean Totsch played a free kick in from 45 yards after a midfield foul just four minutes into the extra period. It was King's first goal of the season, and fourth tally of his career.
"It's about time," NIU head coach Eric Luzzi said. "Timmy King has a knack for finding a way to finish, and I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner."
NIU improved to 5-3-2 with the victory, and have now beaten Wisconsin in five of the last seven meetings. Wisconsin dropped to 1-7-2 on the year with the result.
"It was a game neither team seemed to want to win, but there is something to be said for not having our best performance and finding a way to win against a quality Big Ten opponent," Luzzi said.
A largely uneventful first half saw each team total four shots, with two on goal a piece. One of the best NIU chances came late in the period. Juan Hoyos dribbled down the right side to create his own chance with seven minutes left, but his shot was easily scooped by Badger keeper Max Jentsch.
With less than a minute remaining in the half, junior Brad Horton sprinted down the left side to beat two defenders before laying the Huskies' best chance of the period on target. Jentsch had to make a diving save to push the ball out the endline and end the scoring chance.
But it was NIU keeper Jordan Godsey who had the save of the match. In the 15th minute, Wisconsin's Paul Yonga let loose a strike from 25 yards straight on. Godsey leapt to his left, stretching his right hand to the top of the goal to punch away the ball.
NIU came out in the second half with significantly more energy than the first, creating a corner kick within the first two minutes. The corner resulted in NIU's first goal. After a missed clear from Wisconsin, Johnny Tyma played the ball back into the box, where Brad Horton passed it across the face of the goal to Hoyos, who put the ball away.
The Huskie attack continued as Luis Mojica whipped a shot from the top right of the box with 19 minutes left. Jentsch made another diving save to keep the Badgers within one, a play that would prove critical nine minutes later.
Wisconsin evened the match in the 80th minute. Wisconsin's Jon Rzepka took a shot from inside the box that Godsey saved. On the deflection, Nick Janus fired a shot off the post. The ball bounced to the feet of Danny Ahlering, who scored to tie the match.
The next 10 minutes saw each team pose minor attacks, but never seriously threaten to break the stalemate and prevent overtime.
The Huskies return home to face No. 1 Akron, Oct. 9 at 3 p.m., just hours after the NIU football team hosts Temple at 11 a.m. Fans are encouraged to "Reverse Tailgate" after the football game, then make the short walk to the NIU Soccer and Track & Field Complex to see the biggest soccer rivals in the MAC go head-to-head.
