BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Northern Illinois University wrestling team picked up its first victory of the season, defeating Old Dominion in the first round of the Hoosier Duals Saturday in Assembly Hall.
"We wrestled tough," NIU head coach Dave Grant. "We took Indiana right down to the wire. We were inches away from winning that dual meet. It was really tough competition, but our guys wrestled well."
NIU (1-2) suffered losses to UNC Greensboro and Indiana in the final two duals of the day.
In the first dual of the day, NIU fell behind Old Dominion, 9-3 after four matches. Back-to-back victories by Bryan Deutsch (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) and Matt Mougin (Columbus Junction, Iowa/Columbus Community) at 157 and 165 respectively, gave the Huskies a 10-9 advantage.
After losing a point for unsportsmanlike violation by its bench, ODU won two of the next three matches to take a 14-13 lead heading into the final match. Dakota Greenhaw (Monett, Mo./Monett) then went out and posted a 3-0 victory over Michael Chapman to give the Huskies a 16-14 victory. Against UNC-Greensboro, the Huskies had a 15-6 lead with four matches left. However, UNCG won the final four matches to post a 21-15 victory.
In the final dual of the day, NIU held an 18-15 lead over the host Hoosiers, but dropped the final two matches, including the decisive bout at Heavyweight. Trailing 19-18 heading into the final match, Greenhaw dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 18 Ricky Alcala of Indiana. The Hoosiers posted a 22-18 win.
Several Huskies turned in solid performances. Redshirt freshmen Nick Smith (Ida, Mich./Ida) and Mougin each went 2-1 on the day as did Brad Dieckhaus (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell Central), and seniors Tristen DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./West) and Deutsch.
The Huskies return to action Friday night when the Huskies host Michigan State in their annual Showcase Meet Friday, Dec. 3. The first match begins at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
