IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Northern Illinois men's tennis team wrapped up its weekend road swing with a 7-0 dual match loss at No. 58 Iowa Sunday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
"The score was obviously lopsided today, but I thought our guys battled out there," said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. "Maksym (Bartiuk) really played tough today, in both singles and doubles. That was good to see; he and Javier (Bernabe) played pretty well together at No. 2 doubles.
"Things are starting to come together more. Our schedule lightens up a little bit the next couple of weeks. We'll have some chances to get some wins, provided we continue to improve."
Iowa tallied the doubles point with three-consecutive regulation pro-set wins. Maksym Bartiuk and senior Javier Bernabe, teaming at No. 2 doubles, battled in an 8-6 loss to the Hawkeyes' Reinoud Haal and Garret Dunn.
Bartiuk extended his match to three sets at the top singles flight, but eventually fell by a tally of 6-1, 6-7 and 10-8 versus Iowa's Marc Bruche. The Huskies dropped straight-set decisions in the respective second, No.3, fourth, No. 5 and sixth singles flights. Bernabe, playing No. 3 singles, dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision against the Hawkeyes' Reinoud Haal.
Northern Illinois (1-5) will host Eastern Illinois at Clocktower Resort in Rockford next Friday (Feb. 12) beginning at 5 p.m.
