DEKALB, Ill. - Sophomore Sara McLaughlin accounted for individual wins in both doubles and singles play, and junior Martina Schnapp recorded her third-consecutive Mid-American Conference singles victory, but the Northern Illinois women's tennis team fell short in a 5-2 dual-match decision versus Buffalo at the Huskie Tennis Courts Saturday afternoon.
"We fought hard today, but came up short in doubles, and Buffalo had a very strong showing at the top of its lineup in singles play," said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. "We've got to keep fighting, and find a way to be playing our best tennis down the stretch of the regular season.
"We've got two important road matches next weekend, and we'll be ready. I really like the way we are playing through the middle of our lineup; our challenge now is to put a complete effort together. I'm proud of the way we battled, even in a tough loss."
McLaughlin and senior Kathryn Friedlund teamed for an 8-5 pro-set win at No. 2 doubles, but the Huskies (7-10, 1-5 MAC) dropped identical 8-4 tallies at both the No. 1 and No. 3 positions, as Buffalo got off to a 1-0 lead by winning the decisive doubles point.
McLaughlin, playing No. 4 singles, carried the momentum over, recording a convincing 6-0, 6-1 win over the Bulls' Diana Toia. Schnapp, finishing the order of finish in singles play at No. 6, captured a straight-set (6-3, 7-6 (4)) win over Buffalo's Anna Subenkova. The Bulls tallied straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to collect the five team points.
Northern Illinois will wrap up regular season MAC play next weekend, beginning with a dual-match at Bowling Green next Friday. The Huskies will travel to Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
