DEKALB, Ill. - Sophomore Sara McLaughlin and freshman Kelly Phillips recorded wins at the respective fourth and sixth singles positions, but the Northern Illinois women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Bowling Green Friday afternoon.
"My hat goes off to Bowling Green, they were definitely the better team today," said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. "We played pretty well in doubles, and had some chances, but they (BGSU) really played tough.
"It was great to see Kelly (Phillips) get a win; she had been struggling a bit at the No. 5 spot, so we switched a couple things around so she could be playing against a bit slower of a ball. She really responded, and worked hard out there. Sara (McLaughlin) continues to be our catalyst; she played another great match, and grinded out a tough win in that super tie-breaker."
Bowling Green swept all three doubles matches in regulation pro-sets. The Falcons' Christine Chiricosta and Maddy Eccleston teamed to post an 8-5 win over Brooke Forsberg and Emily Rogers; NIU's tandem of McLaughlin and Kathryn Friedlund (No. 2) dropped an 8-5 decision, while Jessica Easdale and Katie Grubb of Bowling Green outlasted Phillips and Stephanie Okuma, 8-4 at No. 3 doubles.
McLaughlin's three-set (6-2, 4-6, 1-0 [10-4]) win over Easdale marked her fourth singles win in Mid-American Conference play, and completed the order of finish in the match. Phillips, moving from the No. 5 to the No. 6 singles position, cruised to a 6-4, 6-1 win over Grubb, representing her first win during the league slate.
The Huskies (7-11, 1-6 MAC) dropped straight-set decisions at the No.1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 singles positions. The order of finish in doubles play went 1, 3, 2; while singles play was completed in the following order: 1, 5, 6, 3, 2, 4. The Falcons' Mary-Catherine Beck also recorded a 6-3, 6-1 win over NIU's Kendall Robison in an exhibition singles match.
Northern Illinois will play its regular-season MAC finale at Western Michigan Saturday afternoon. Start time from the Sorensen Courts in Kalamazoo is set for noon CST.
