EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University wrestling team cruised to a pair of dual match victories, shutting out Knox, 57-0, and scoring a 40-3 win over Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville Saturday afternoon at the Vadalabene Center.
"It was a dominant performance from our guys," NIU head coach Dave Grant said. "They wrestled tough and solid. These weren't conference matches, but it's important to be dominant in these situations."
NIU (5-10, 1-4) overwhelmed Knox, with six pin fall wins and two technical fall victories. Mike Lukowski (East Dundee, Ill./Dundee Crown) recorded the fastest victory for NIU, pinning William Milleville of Knox in 54 seconds at 197. Tristen DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./West) scored a 17-0 technical fall of Knox's Charley Deutsch at 141, while at 133 Kevin Fanta (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) earned a 16-0 technical fall over Edel Vaca.
Freshman Nick Smith (Ida, Mich./Ida) earned two pins at 125 on the day. After pinning Francisco Munoz in the Knox dual, he pinned Paul Meyers of SIUE in 1:36. DeShazer recorded a team-high ninth pin fall victory, defeating Nick Capozzoli in 1:12.
Senior Bryan Deutsch (Columbia City, Ind./Columbia City) continued his winning ways, defeating Knox's Dylan Reynolds in 1:31 and scoring a 4-1 decision Kyle Lowman. Fellow senior Dakota Greenhaw (Monett, Mo./Monett) posted an 8-2 win over SIUE's David Devine.
The Huskies return to action Feb. 20 when Northern Illinois travels to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on MAC foe Buffalo in the final regular season match of the season. First bout is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. CST.
