YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The Northern Illinois women's tennis team fell to Eastern Michigan, 7-0, on Friday afternoon in its Mid-American Conference opener at the Chippewa Racquet Club.

"The energy was good today, the effort was good and the attitude was good," said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. "We just struggled to stay disciplined. We had a gameplan and we were doing a nice job of executing it, but as soon as Eastern Michigan countered we began to back away from it."

In doubles to begin the day, Katie Friedlund and Sara McLaughlin were tripped up, 8-4, at number two while Haley Dekkinga and Ilse Pacheco also fell 8-4 in flight three. Eastern Michigan took the flight one match, 8-1, to sweep the doubles point.

Emily Rogers and Dekkinga played tight matches at third and fourth singles. Dekkinga dropped the first set to Marcela Rivero, 6-4, before rebounding to take set two, 6-3. In the third set super-tiebreaker, Rivero claimed the match with a 10-6 win.

Rogers was edged 7-5 in the first set at number three by Mariya Toncheva. In the second set, Toncheva took a 4-1 lead before Rogers battled back to even the set, 4-4, but was unable to finish the comeback as Toncheva prevailed, 6-4.

The Eagles claimed straight-sets wins at first, second, fifth and sixth singles.

The Huskies will return to the courts on Saturday, April 2, when they take on Toledo on the road. The match against the Rockets is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
