AKRON, Ohio - The Northern Illinois women's tennis team completed the road portion of its Mid-American Conference schedule on Saturday at Akron. The Huskies fell, 7-0, to the Zips indoors at the LaTuchie Tennis Center.
"The attitude and effort of our team was excellent today and that made the match a lot of fun," said NIU head coach Ryun Ferrell. "We executed exactly the way that we wanted to, but in the end Akron was just a little too good for us to overcome. Our team played with great discipline and everyone played their heart out but we just played against an excellent team today.
Akron (16-3, 6-0 MAC) claimed all three doubles matches, Emily Rogers and Haley Dekkinga played the nationally-ranked duo of Zara Harutyunyan and Angelina Jogasuria at number one falling, 8-4.
In singles play, Martina Schnapp took the first set at number two, 6-4. Akron's Angelina Jogasuria responded to take the second set, 6-0, and then took the third-set tiebreaker, 10-8 to win the match.
The Zips won the other five singles matches in straight-sets.
NIU will return home for the final weekend of the regular season. The Huskies will host Western Michigan on Friday, April 22, before welcoming Bowling Green on Saturday, April 23. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
