DEKALB, Ill. -- Seniors Mike Mascitti (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove South) and Pat Sloan (Lisle, Ill./Benet Academy) of the Northern Illinois men’s soccer team were named to the Academic All-MAC Team while sophomores Paul Hogan (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North), Jayson LeSeth (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West) and Dusty Page (Germantown, Wis./Kettle Moraine Lutheran) each earned honorable mention recognition the league office announced Monday morning.
This is the second-straight season in which Mascitti has earned Academic All-MAC recognition, Sloan was an Academic Honorable Mention recipient a season ago.
“I’m very pleased for all five of these guys,” said NIU head coach Eric Luzzi. “It’s not easy to balance the requirements that we have for our players on the field and truly excel in the classroom. These guys represent what we hope all of our student-athletes strive to achieve, and I’m happy for them that they have been recognized with this award.”
Mascitti, an applied mathematics and biochemistry major, has a 3.699 GPA and was named to the MAC All-Tournament team while helping lead NIU to the conference championship game for the second consecutive season. Mascitti played and started 19 matches, helping the Huskies record nine shutouts while also recording an assist in the season-opener against third-ranked Creighton.
Sloan, a business major with a 3.667 GPA, started all 20 matches for the Huskies and was the lone field player to play every minute of every game during the 2012 season. Sloan was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Northwestern Lakeside Classic and helped the Huskies earn nine shutouts while playing left back.
Hogan, who holds a 3.295 GPA majoring in kinesiology, was one of six players to play in all 20 matches this season, making four starts. Hogan recorded six shots on the season.
LeSeth has a 3.233 GPA in business while playing in 19 games, including 19 starts. LeSeth scored in lone goal of the season in the MAC Tournament Semifinals, netting the game-winner against West Virginia. LeSeth was named to the All-Tournament Team at both the MAC Tournament at the NIU/adidas Invitational.
Page, a business major with a 4.0 GPA, played in 11 matches, making 10 starts. Page played the full 90 minutes in nine of his 11 appearances and registered 10 shots on the season.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport. First year student and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
