DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are
Giovanni Garcia of men's soccer and
Cristina Alvarez of women's tennis.
The following Huskies have been nominated to the Mid-American Conference for the league's weekly Scholar Athlete of the Week awards. NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference.

Week's Achievements:
Giovanni Garcia lifted the NIU men’s soccer team to its fourth overtime victory of the season, this time in the MAC opener for the Huskies as the sophomore midfielder scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute at Bowling Green on Saturday. After a scoreless regulation, Garcia made the difference in the game in the first overtime period, receiving a pass 30 yards from goal, turning and unleashing a dipping 25-yard strike into the net off the underside of the crossbar to dramatically give the Huskies three points in MAC play with his second career goal.

Week's Achievements:
Cristina Alvarez excelled in NIU women’s tennis action over the weekend at the University of Illinois-Chicago Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Huskie senior advanced to the finals in the top-tier brackets in both singles and doubles, earning four victories in total as she played her best tennis of the fall season thus far. Alvarez even had the lead in the final of the UIC Invite Go Flight final and also advanced to the final of the Flight A doubles tournament in Chicago with partner Adey Osabuohien.
