NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week: Nov. 9-15

Nov. 16, 2015 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Max Scharping of football and Mary Grace Kelly of volleyball.

NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference, and have already won three times this year as well.

Week's Achievements:
Max Scharping paved the way for an NIU rushing explosion last Wednesday as the Huskies improved to 5-1 in MAC play with a 41-30 victory at Buffalo. The NIU offensive line, led by Scharping’s dominant blocking on the right side, helped Huskie rushers rumble for 334 yards on the ground on 67 attempts with three touchdowns for an average of 5.0 yards per carry. Three Huskies – Joel Bouagnon, Jordan Huff and new quarterback Ryan Graham – each topped 50 yards rushing on the evening.
 Week's Achievements:
Mary Grace Kelly helped the NIU volleyball team clinch the MAC regular season championship with her best weekend of the season, tallying double-digit kills in both matches as the Huskies swept Western Michigan and Bowling Green to secure the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament. Kelly finished with 10 kills against the Broncos and 12 versus the Falcons – good enough for 3.67 kills per set over the two contests while posting a hitting percentage of .263.
