ROCKFORD, Ill. - Eight is great. Another day, another dominant victory for the Northern Illinois University women's tennis team as the Huskies improved to 8-0 and completed a perfect weekend with an impressive 6-1 triumph over Chicago State on Sunday afternoon at the Boylan Tennis Center in Rockford, Ill.
The Huskies followed up sweeps of Southeast Missouri and Valparaiso on Friday and Saturday, respectively, with another lopsided win on Sunday to with their eighth straight match to start the spring while completing a perfect six-match homestand.
Another perfect afternoon gave senior and NIU women's tennis all-time wins leader Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) two more victories to add to her tally, moving her to 16-0 overall this spring. Senior Mary Malkin (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance) also owns an undefeated singles record this season, winning all eight of her matches in the No. 3 position; meanwhile, junior Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) also completed a flawless weekend of action during NIU's trio of home matches.
NIU head coach Tanya Gombera was ecstatic following Sunday's victory over a Chicago State squad that the Huskies lost to 4-2 in 2014, calling it her team's best performance of the season.
"Wow! I thought the team played so well today," Gombera said after the match. "It was certainly one of our best performances of the season against a strong Chicago State team that beat us badly last year. I'm looking forward to next weekend already, hoping that we can maintain the same level of play against another tough team."
NIU will put its undefeated record on the line next Saturday at Southern Illinois when the Huskies take on the Salukis in Carbondale, Ill. at 9 a.m. CT.
