DeKALB, Ill. - The 2015 football season will mark the 50th Anniversary of Northern Illinois University's Huskie Stadium, the on-campus facility that has been the site of 163 wins by the NIU football team over the last 50 seasons, four MAC Championship teams and many of the greatest players in school history.
On Tuesday, NIU unveiled the official Huskie Stadium 50th Anniversary logo that will kick off a season-long celebration of the wins, teams, players and events that have been held in Huskie Stadium.
The logo, created for NIU Athletics by Rick Cerrone Communications and graphic artist Michael Macchione, conveys the iconic look of the west grandstand as it appeared when the stadium opened on November 6, 1965 and incorporates the Huskies' current primary logo along with the number "50".
"Huskie Stadium has been the scene of so many memorable moments in NIU's football history," said NIU Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Sean T. Frazier. "I think all Huskie fans - those who have been here for many of the past 50 years and our more recent followers - are really going to enjoy this 50-year anniversary. This commemorative logo is just the first step in what I know will be an outstanding celebration of NIU history throughout the 2015 season."
Huskie Stadium's 50th Anniversary will serve as the focal point of numerous initiatives, events and promotions that will be announced throughout the months leading up to the 2015 season. Fans will have a chance to get involved and share their favorite Huskie Stadium memories via NIU's official social media platforms. The logo will be used prominently in NIU Athletics' 2015 football marketing materials.
Dedicated on November 6, 1965 with a 48-6 NIU win over Illinois State on Homecoming, the stadium was named Huskie Stadium in 1974 as part of NIU's 75th Anniversary celebration. On August 28, 2003, the facility was rededicated as Brigham Field at Huskie Stadium in honor of the late Dr. Robert J. Brigham, an institutional icon who carried the school's colors for more than 50 years as a student-athlete, assistant coach, head coach, director of athletics, and special assistant to the president before his retirement in June 2001.
In addition to playing host to 261 NIU football games, where the Huskies own a 163-96-2 record all-time and have won 30 of their last 31 games, Huskie Stadium is the practice home of the football team, the NIU wrestling and women's gymnastics programs, and provides locker and equipment room space for several other Huskie teams.
The facility has also been the site of NIU field hockey and soccer matches, high school football games, including the 2013 Illinois High School Association Football Championships, drum corps competitions, community events and even weddings.
The defending MAC Champion Huskies will open the 2015 football season at Huskie Stadium on Sept. 5 versus UNLV as part of a six-game home schedule.
