NIU Tops SIUE for Fifth Consecutive Win

March 1, 2015

DEKALB, Ill. -- The Northern Illinois University men’s tennis team finished a weekend sweep with a 5-2 victory over SIU Edwardsville on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Huskies improved to 8-2 on the season with their fifth-straight victory.

“It was a good weekend for us,” said NIU head coach Patrick Fisher. “SIUE is a very experienced team and they fought extremely hard. They had some momentum during singles, but credit our young team, we just kept playing and eventually turned the tide back our way. Experiencing these tight situations with our young team can only help and we have yet to play our best, in my opinion, I know we can play better.”

For the second consecutive day, the Huskies took the doubles point to claim a 1-0 lead. Senior Frederic Cadieux (Verdun, Quebec, Canada/Ediuard-Montpetit) and freshman Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege) won their eighth match together with an 8-3 victory at number one. At number three, junior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) and freshman Tom Hjertonsson (Gothenburg, Sweden/Akademi Båstad Gymnasium) were 8-4 winners to clinch the point for the Huskies.

Four of the six singles matches went three sets, with NIU taking three of those matches, to earn the victory.

Freshman Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) earned NIU’s lone straight sets victory with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Matthew Hutchinson at number six.

At number five, sophomore Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe) dropped the first set, 6-4, to Patrick Gaffigan before rebounding to take sets two and three, 6-1, 6-3.

Formont and Hamel each took the first set in their matches before being pushed to the limit. Formont earned a victory over Nico Kuehn at number two, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, while Hamel was a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 victor over Tristan Houle at number four.

NIU will return to action on Thursday, March 5, when the Huskies travel to Milwaukee to face Marquette. The match against the Golden Eagles is scheduled for 6 p.m.
