DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team split a pair of matches in Florida this week, concluding a successful nonconference portion of its 2015 spring schedule.
The Huskies (9-3) swept Bucknell 7-0 on Tuesday evening in Orlando -- NIU's third shutout victory of the season -- before dropping a 6-1 decision to Bethune Cookman on Wednesday in Dayton Beach in a match that featured several close defeats that could've went the Huskies' way. The team's other scheduled match for their trip to Florida against Hampton was rained out and will not be made up.
NIU senior Nelle Youel (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) became the NIU all-time singles wins leader in school history and continuedher undefeated start to the spring, winning all four of her matches in the Sunshine State. Her overall record in 2015 improved to 22-0, with 12 singles wins and 10 doubles victories. Her victory against Bucknell, which was the 81st singles win in her NIU career, moved her past Anna Widen (1996-2000) and into first place in Huskie history for singles wins.
Youel, who was named Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week for the seventh time in her career on Wednesday, teamed up with No. 1 doubles partner Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus) to defeat the top tandems of Bucknell and Bethune Cookman, while Youel also won her two No. 1 singles matches -- both in striaght sets.
The Huskies finish their nonconference slate with a 9-3 record and will now enter their Mid-American Conference schedule, which begins with trips to Bowling Green and Miami next weekend.
NIU women's tennis will face the Falcons on Friday, March 20 at 1 p.m. CT before battling the RedHawks on Sunday, March 22 at 1 p.m. CT.
