DEKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois University women's gymnastics team is looking to close out the regular season strong and enter the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships with momentum as the Huskies play host to Eastern Michigan at the Convocation Center Sunday.
NIU (10-4, 3-2) has been solid at home this season, posting 6-1 mark in the Convo including a 3-0 record in dual meets.
"We get to wrap up the regular season at home, which is a great thing," said NIU head coach Sam Morreale. "We're kind of fine tuning heading into the MAC Championship. We get to see the last team in our league, Eastern Michigan, who's had a solid year. It will be nice to measure ourselves against them."
The Eagles enter Sunday's competition with a 12-2 overall record. The Eagles provide a great opportunity for NIU to compete against another quality opponent, and a league foe.
"It's another chance to win in the MAC," Morreale said. "They've [EMU] have had a good year and we're going to do our best to post some good scores and hopefully beat them."
And like the Huskies, Eastern Michigan boasts a 3-2 mark in league action. Both the Eagles and NIU are tied for second in the league with Western Michigan. Should the Huskies win on Sunday and the Broncos fall to Central Michigan, NIU would take second place.
"It will be bittersweet, but it will be a definite upgrade from year's past," he said. "We've come up a little short of the goal, but that doesn't take away from what we've accomplished this year."
The Huskies have topped the 195.00 mark twice this season, in back-to-back meets. The highlight of the season so far was the 195.650 NIU scored in its wins over Bowling Green and Alaska, tying the school record. The Huskies are still chasing that elusive 196.00 and Morreale feels the key to reaching that number is simple.
"We've got to get hits," Morreale said. "We just have to build off what we did really well last week, do it again and kind of smooth out those kinks we had on beam and floor."
The Huskies took second at the State of Illinois Classic with a 194.350. NIU posted a season-high 48.975 on vault, which ranks fourth in Huskie history, thanks to a pair of 9.900s scored by Amanda Stepp (Lapeer, Mich./Lapeer) and Megan Greenfield (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake South).
Sunday's meet will also be Senior Day as NIU will honor its seven Huskie seniors, Stepp, Shelby Davis, Nichole Fulton, Morgan Johnson, Kelly Nortz, Meg Piepenbrink and Peyton Taylor.
