DEKALB, Ill. - Megan Greenfield and Amanda Stepp each scored a 9.900 on the vault to win the event and help lead the Northern Illinois University women's gymnastics team finished second at the State of Illinois Classic at the Convocation Center Saturday night.
Greenfield and Steep's performance on the vault garnered the Huskie pair the state title and put their names in the NIU record book. Their 9.900 is tied for fourth all-time in Huskie history and the first such score since Jaelyn Olsen accomplished the feat Mar. 8, 2014.
The NIU duo, along with a 9.825 from Andie Van Voorhis (Columbus, Ohio/Hillard) and a 9.725 by Ashley Potts (Oakwood Hills, Ill./Prairie Ridge), propelled the Huskies to a season-high 48.975. Not only is it a season high for NIU, it also ranks second all-time in Huskie history. It's the fourth time this season a NIU vault score has found its way into the Huskie record book.
"It was hard for me from going to the team after from being emotional," said NIU head coach Sam Morreale. "That's how they train, so it was good to see them do it in a meet. That was a pretty big start to the meet for us."
NIU's vault score gave the Huskies a .150 lead over No. 12 Illinois, 48.825 after the first rotation.
The Huskies carried their momentum into their next event, the uneven parallel bars. NIU scored their third-best bars score of the season, a 48.850, led by sophomore Jamyra Carter's (Ypsilanti, Mich./Huron) 9.850. Carter, who took third place, was followed closely by Potts who scored a career-high 9.825.
Illinois overtook the Huskies with a 49.075 performance on the vault to lead NIU 97.900-97.825 heading into the third rotation.
The Huskies slipped to third, behind Illinois State following a 47.925 showing on the balance beam. Illinois State scored a 48.650 on the floor to take a .050 lead into the final rotation.
NIU responded with a solid performance on the floor exercise to overtake the Redbirds and finish in second. Courtney Dowdell (Linwood,Ill./Thornton Fractional South) and Brittany Wenzel (Hillard, Ohio/Davidson) tied for second with a 9.800 each.
"The kids fought hard after struggling on the beam," Morreale said. "After the first two, we with Illinois, fighting to challenge them. After beam, we were with ISU fighting for second. We went to floor and did a good job finishing it [the meet] off."
The Huskies improved on last year's showing in the State Meet in both place and score. Last year, NIU finished third with a 193.625.
The Illini won the event with a 196.275, Illinois State took third (193.525) and UIC came in fourth with its 192.750.
NIU wraps up its regular season Sunday, Mar. 15 when the Huskies welcome Eastern Michigan to the Convocation Center for a Mid-American Conference match up. Competition begins at 2 p.m.
