YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Northern Illinois University women's tennis team dropped a Mid-American Conference match against Eastern Michigan on Easter Sunday, with the Huskies falling to the Eagles, 5-2.
Despite point-earning singles wins by the Youel sisters (Crystal Lake, Ill./Crystal Lake Central) -- Nelle Youel in the No. 1 match and Evelyn Youel in a dramatic three-set No. 5 match -- NIU (11-5, 2-2 MAC) fell to Eastern Michigan (6-12, 2-3 MAC)at the Claudia Wasix Tennis Complex in Ypsilanti, Mich.
Huskie senior star Nelle Youel improved to 16-0 in singles matches this year by earning a 6-2, 6-3 win over Klara Supejova in the No. 1 singles match.
However, Youel lost her undefeated overall record as she lost for the first time this spring in doubles with partner Cristina Alvarez (Zaragoza, Spain/Cristorey and Sagrado Corazon de Jesus).
NIU women's tennis head coach Tanya Gombera saw the defeat as a missed opportunity but is confident the team can improve before its two crucial MAC matchups next weekend, which will be held at home in DeKalb.
"It was a tough loss for us today, as I felt like we had a lot of opportunites. But we will work on the things we need to improve at and our focus will shift to our matches against Ball State and Western Michigan next weekend," Gombera said.
The Huskies are scheduled to play in DeKalb for the first time this season when they welcome the Cardinals on Friday and the Broncos on Sunday next weekend. Both matches are slated to start at 1 p.m. CT at the West Tennis Courts next to the Chessick Practice Center.
