NIU Scholar Athletes of the Week: March 30-April 5

April 6, 2015 DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are Carlos Manzanas of men's tennis and Emily Naegele from softball.

These two Huskies have been nominated to the MAC for the league's Scholar Athlete of the Week award, which NIU student-athletes have won nine times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference.

Then on Sunday, Manzanas swept aside Daniel Cardenas 6-1, 6-2 and teamed up with Louis-Philippe Hamel to win a doubles match, helping the Huskies earn a solid 5-2 team win against IPFW. Manzanas now owns an impressive 13-3 singles record this spring.

On Saturday against Toledo, Naegele hit a game-tying home run in the sixth inning before hitting a game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to help NIU to a 6-5 walk-off win. Her hot hitting continued on Easter Sunday with a grand slam in NIU's 14-5 five-inning win, the first by a Huskie since Ashley Kopp did so on March 29, 2013.
