DETROIT, Mich. -- The Northern Illinois University men's tennis team improved to 16-5 with a 4-0 victory over the University of Detroit on Thursday at the Franklin Athletic Club. The Huskies took the doubles point and the first three completed singles matches to clinch the victory.

NIU earned the doubles point with victories at number one and three. At number one, freshmen Kevin Daun (Vasteras, Sweden/Widenska Gymnasiet Idrottscollege) and Georg Lundkvist (Linkoping, Sweden/Lindkopings Kommun) outlasted Jay Joshi and Ismail Kadyrov, 7-5. Junior Simon Formont (Orléans, France/Lycée Camille Claudel) and sophomore Carlos Manzanas (Madrid, Spain/IES Principe Felipe) defeated Rafael Orantes and Chance Conley, 6-4.

In singles play, Formont cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Nathan Ponton for his 15th singles win of the season. Manzanas claimed a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Joshi at number five as he improved to 19-9 on the season; Manzanas has won nine of his last 10 singles matches.

The Huskies clinched the match win as Lundkvist finished off a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Conley at number six as the NIU freshman earned his 13th win of the season. In each of the three unfinished singles matches, the Huskies had taken the first set.

NIU will return to conference action on Saturday, April 11, when the Huskies visit Toledo. The match against the Rockets is scheduled to begin at noon CT.
