DEKALB, Ill. – With temps in the upper 60s and mostly cloudy skies, the Northern Illinois University football team turned in its only two-a-day practice in fall-like conditions at the 2015 camp at Huskie Stadium Wednesday.
The Huskies hit the practice field at 8:40 a.m. this morning and turned in a 16-period workout in shorts, shoulder pads and helmets. NIU was back at it again in the afternoon for its regularly scheduled practice at 2:40 p.m. For the afternoon session, the Huskies donned full pads and practiced for a little under two hours. NIU head coach Rod Carey was pleased with the way the team responded to the impromptu two-a-day.
“We had to get them going a little bit,” Carey said. “It was probably the two best practices of execution and tempo. There’s still a lot to get batter at. We’re nowhere ready for a game yet. We’ve got a long ways to go, but it was a good start to a really tough day.”
Wednesday’s practice was the midpoint of the final week of football-only practices for NIU. While the Huskies start school on Monday, camp isn’t over. Carey knows there’s a lot the team can improve on between now and when UNLV comes to town Sept. 5.
“We’re still in camp even though the first week of school is going on,” he said. “Out of the next week and a half, we’ve got to see those fundamentals get better, the assignments get better and be more consistent.”
