DeKALB - After opening camp with team meetings and media day at Huskie Stadium yesterday, the NIU football program began fall camp Thursday as the Huskies prepare to defend their 2014 Mid-American Conference Championship.

Practicing for roughly 90 minutes in helmets on the brand new turf of Brigham Field, Head Coach Rod Carey was excited to get back to the basics with the team and had a simple approach to today’s practice.

“I look for energy, execution and to make sure we’re getting better at the fundamentals when we’re in helmets. That’s what it’s all about, making sure we’re getting better at the fundamentals. That was our main focus today,” said Carey.

“It was good running around with our underwear on for the first time. We had a good tempo with everything today. Overall I was pleased. I saw some things that we need to clean up, mostly little details, but other than that there was good energy,” Carey added.

After starting with special teams, the individual groups worked drills with a couple scattered periods of team groups. With no pads on, only the offensive and defensive skilled position players worked against each other. Offensive and defensive line groups worked on blitz pickup and stunt drills, respectively, during the team sessions.

“We weren’t looking at doing as much team stuff today, we do a lot of individual and fundamental work on these types of days. We want to make sure we ease the players back into it and that they’re going full speed,” Carey added.

The Huskies practice was the first of two in helmets only. NIU players will strap on their shoulder pads both Saturday and Sunday before wearing full pads for the first time on Monday afternoon.
