DeKALB, Ill. - Each week, NIU honors two student-athletes that exemplify the concept of the "student-athlete" supremely well. These students excel both in the classroom and on the playing field. This week, the honorees are
Luke Read of men's soccer and
Lena Gautier of women's golf.
The following Huskies have been nominated to the Mid-American Conference for the league's weekly Scholar Athlete of the Week awards. NIU student-athletes won 10 times during the 2014-15 season, tied for the most in the conference.

Week's Achievements:
Luke Read was the hero was in a pair of wins for the Huskies in the NIU adidas Invitational. On Friday, Read netted his first career goal off a corner kick in the 82nd minute as NIU defeated Florida Atlantic, 1-0. Along with getting the winning goal, Read played 90 minutes along the backline for the Huskies, helping NIU allow just four total shots and only one shot on goal. Two days later it was déjà vu for Read and the Huskies as the sophomore defender slotted home the lone goal in the 88th minute of a victory over Stetson. Read was again solid along the backline as he played 90 minutes and helped allow just six total shots to Stetson, including just three on target for the Hatters. For his efforts Read was named to the NIU adidas Invitational All-Tournament Team as the Huskies were crowned co-tournament champions with Loyola-Chicago. |
Week's Achievements:
Lena Gautier went low for the NIU women’s golf team on Sunday, shooting a 72 in the final round of the Diane Thomas Invitational at Iowa to move from 12th to 5th on the leaderboard. The junior finished the tournament with a top-five finish thanks to three rounds in the 70s and a total score of 224 in weekend tournament that featured golfers from Iowa, Rutgers, Harvard and several other notable schools. For the native of La Celle Saint Cloud, France native, it was also Gautier’s second consecutive top-10 finish after she finished tied for ninth at Illinois State’s Redbird Invitational over Labor Day weekend. |
